The Appearance Money Scheme (AMS), introduced in 2018 to replace the Sunday Appearance Money Scheme, continues in 2020 with a £6.9m budget (2019:£6.5m).
The AMS is designed to ensure that any horse finishing down to 8th place in an eligible race will receive a minimum of £300 (Flat) and £350 (Jump). On all Floodlit fixtures, Friday and Saturday summer evenings and for all Sunday fixtures the amount per horse is increased by an extra £100 (i.e. £400 minimum for Flat finishers and £450 minimum for Jump finishers).
The purpose of the scheme is two-fold: (i) to improve returns to owners by encouraging racecourses to invest their own funds in prize money at the grassroots of the sports and (ii) to boost field sizes.
Racecourses can access available funds in the same manner by which they access the Lower RIF payments for Classes 3-5 Jump/4-6 Flat, i.e. they must invest £400 above the minimum value for that class of race to receive the funding.
