Chair and Members of the Veterinary Advisory Committee Expressions of interest
Expressions of interest are invited for the Chair and for two new members of the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) Veterinary Advisory Committee (VAC).
The goal of the HBLB's veterinary research funding is to support scientifically robust research which will benefit the health and well-being of horses, particularly the Thoroughbred during racing, breeding and rearing; minimise the impact and improve the clinical management of disease and injury in all age groups; and prevent injury in racehorses. To achieve this, HBLB offers a range of research grants and educational awards. The VAC is composed of scientists and clinicians with an interest in the Thoroughbred and advises the HBLB on its veterinary research and education investment, including appraisal of the scientific merit and relevance of applications and oversight of funded projects. Stakeholder communication is a key priority.
Chair
Appropriate candidates will hold veterinary and/or research degrees and have an international reputation in science. A proven interest in Thoroughbred health is desirable.
Interviews will be held in February 2026, with the successful candidate being appointed from Spring 2026 on a date to be agreed.
Members
The VAC is also looking to appoint two new members to expand the representation on the Committee. In particular, the VAC is looking for two academic scientists with expertise that can be applied to research to benefit the Thoroughbred horse. The VAC is particularly interested in the following areas:
- Deep/machine learning techniques
- Identification and prevention of orthopaedic disease and injury, including imaging
- Respiratory health and disease
The VAC usually meets four times a year, including one in-person two day meeting In addition, one or two half day consultation group meetings may be held virtually as required. An honorarium and expenses are paid.
