Expressions of interest are invited for new members of the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) Veterinary Advisory Committee (VAC).
The goal of the HBLB's veterinary research funding is to support scientifically robust research projects which will benefit the health and well-being of horses, particularly the Thoroughbred during racing, breeding and rearing; minimise the impact and improve the clinical management of disease and injury in all age groups; and prevent injury in racehorses. To achieve this, HBLB offers a range of research grants and educational awards. The VAC is composed of scientists and clinicians with an interest in the Thoroughbred and advises the HBLB on its veterinary research and education investment, including appraisal of the scientific merit and relevance of applications and oversight of funded projects. Stakeholder communication is a key priority.
Over the next twelve months, the VAC is planning to appoint seven new members to fill existing and upcoming vacancies and to expand the Committee. In particular, the VAC is looking for:
• Three clinicians engaged in work with Thoroughbreds
• Four scientists with expertise in, variously,
• Orthopaedics/ Musculoskeletal biology and disease/Imaging
• Equine Internal Medicine
• Deep/machine learning techniques
The VAC usually meets in London twice a year, including one overnight stay. In addition, one or two half day consultation group meetings may be held virtually as required. An honorarium and expenses are paid.
Interviews will be held in February 2022.
